There comes a point where you have to just believe that baby is coming, if for nothing else but logistics. (It's also rather nice, pyschologically.) And at this point – after a "perfect" anatomy scan and continued reassurance a month later – we are choosing to believe that it is. Which means that we also need to deal with those logistics.
It seems that one is supposed to sign up for birth preparation classes early ... like a couple months earlier than we just did. Nevertheless, we were lucky enough to find a space at the hospital we prefer, the one we'll likely choose for the birth, in the one class that both begins after my return to Switzerland and ends before the due date. Whew.
Thanks to Josey's awesome recounting of her awesome experience with the Hypnobabies self-hypnosis childbirth program, I'm going to prepare with the home study course. A strange choice, perhaps, for the girl who used to be infamous at junior high slumber parties for her capacity to put into a trance all the other non-slumbering partiers although she was unhypnotizable herself, but I'm willing to give the mind-over-matter aspect of it a shot. It's more appealing than huffing my way through a Lamaze class, in any case. Our ultimate goal is the best of both worlds: a natural childbirth in a hospital setting. I'm finding this book on just that topic another good companion in our attempts to reach that goal.
And the stuff; oh, the stuff. After time spent abroad and, especially, in light of my sister's generosity in handing down a year's worth of goodies, baby now has everything we think it will need, which is to say: not much. Or so we hope, based both on our lifestyle and on our general philosphies, that all it will need is exactly that: not much. More later on what we chose and why, for those who are interested.
I am interested, most certainly! I am also of the opinion that they need very little. There is a wonderful book called simplicity parenting that I think you would enjoy.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recommendation! That book just happens to be the PAIL pick for discussion this month. Perhaps I should dig in.
DeleteI am so excited for you!!
ReplyDeleteThanks! And me for you too.
DeleteLast night I went to my first class, breast feeding 101. Talk about an out-of-body experience. I still feel like a poser or something even though I was farther along that 1/2 the girls in the class. I wonder if I will ever shake that? I am thinking not since I am nearing 32 weeks. I am going to read that book that you mentioned in your post. I have been thinking about trying for no meds, too, if I can, but I know that I need to be in the hospital due to all of my "issues". That is awesome that you have so many things for baby! I have my baby shower this weekend so I am hoping we can get most of the stuff we need. Is this actually going to happen??? :) I need to be more like you and try to accept that.
ReplyDeleteDespite this progress in thinking positively, there's still a major disconnect between, for example, looking at the stuff and imagining an actual real live baby using it in a few short months. So I understand how you feel. Perhaps your shower will bring you not only some good "stuff" but also the feeling that this is really, really real - I hope so!
DeleteI hope you love the HB course!! It truly changed my whole attitude about pregnancy and childbirth and gave me so much CONFIDENCE in my body again (and a relaxed attitude to go along with it). It might feel a bit hokey at first, but really throw yourself into it, and one day you'll realize that you truly BELIEVE those positive affirmations, and it's just awesome. :)
ReplyDeleteSo far, I really love the idea of it, even though, yes, it does feel a bit hokey! I think for me it will be less about "hypnosis" per se and more about relaxation, positive thinking, and confidence-building, as you recognized for you. I also think the half-hour (or full hour, with the affirmations) allows for some good reflection, as well as bonding, even. That too is appreciated.
DeleteI'm so glad for you! Visiting the States is awesome to get "stuff", but they also have some great things over here. It's the best of both worlds.
ReplyDeleteI know ... there are some toy, clothing, and furniture stores here that just kill me! Although there's no need, they plant that little seed of want - so dangerous.
DeleteYayaya, I want to hear your philosophies on what baby needs and why. I want to jump on the minimalist bandwagon. :)
ReplyDeleteOkay - just keep in mind I have no idea what I'm talking about! I read your recent post and am so excited that things are getting so close for you.
DeleteI want to hear all about the hypnobirthing! I have a friend who used that for her delivery and swears by it. And I want to know what supplies you believe are needed for baby, too. Just because I'm curious. :)
ReplyDeleteOkay, I'll post about it soon - but then you'll have to give me the expert opinion!
DeleteJosey's post on HypnoBabies inspired me, too!! I can't wait to hear more about it from you.
ReplyDeleteThe tracks have been the soundtrack to some really awesome naps. I'll share more once I can stay awake long enough to really listen!
DeleteI agree about not needed much. We didn't have much with our 1st. It grew to a ton of stuff as he grew, but in the beginning, most of the stuff we needed was actually stuff for me!
ReplyDeleteI can only imagine how it grows, principles and ideals be damned! Stuff for you, like what? I'm curious if there's something I'm overlooking ....
DeleteI'm so happy to see you taking these steps. Now if I could just get there myself. :-P I'm definitely going to be checking out that book, though.
ReplyDeleteThe book is great - I've read or skimmed most of it, and now I'm going back through with a highlighter. I'll be all ready for the final exam soon!
