We may have come into this world twenty months apart, each to a different set of parents, but we’ve been twins since we first met at university almost eighteen years ago, before our freshman year even began. We’re both tall, tanned, blue-eyed blondes, but what really set us apart from all the other beach bunnies on that southern California campus was our English accents.
“Are you sisters?” we’d hear, all the time. And it wasn’t long before one of us, without a glance at the other, answered, firmly, “Yes. Twins.”
And so the English Twins were born, or, rather, found.
Her daughter was born fourteen months ago, two months after my Twin’s 34th birthday. Our baby, had that too-small seemingly empty gestational sac developed into something that could be called that, would have been born two months after my 34th birthday.
Our children would have had the same difference in age as we do.
Her daughter was born six months after her brother’s son. Our baby would have been born six months after my sister’s daughter is expected to arrive.
Our children would have had the same age gap between their older cousins.
I was delighted when I first calculated this a few weeks ago, a few innocent weeks ago. What strange and funny parallels the world can draw! Now all seems perpendicular, and I didn’t even have the chance to tell her before it changed.
I know. I've been there. But really. My twin, 'proper' twin is due in October. I would have been due in December. I can't tell you how happy we both were after both having to have IVF that things were going right for us at the same time and the cousins would be so close in age. Telling her that I was no longer pregnant was one of the hardest things about the whole missed miscarriage.
ReplyDeleteAhh. I can only imagine how that added to your sense of loss - to your loss itself. How horribly cruel.
Deleteja,ja I totally thought that was your twin! I'm like, "they're even more alike than my twin and I" lol Glad to hear stories about wonderful friendships like the one you have, it makes the world shine brighter :)
ReplyDeleteAh, you have a twin of the real variety? Very cool - although a twin you find can be just as wonderful as a twin you are born with!
