See this guy?
(I'll wait a minute so everybody can go aaawwww .......)
***
He's a lovebug by day and a fiend by night, a sweetheart with a true devious streak, a purrer and a talker and a cuddler, but only if you're standing while you're cuddling him, and he really merits his very own post. This is not it.
This is the post about his litter box, which I accidentally dumped all over our living room yesterday.
Among the cat's not-so-many faults is that he is a terrible tracker of kitty litter. Every time he uses his box, he leaves a trail of litter going all the way back to the living room, which is where he spends most of his time. (Unless he's napping on our bed. Or looking out the kitchen window at the birds who love to taunt him so. Or on my knees, at the computer, helping me to type, as he is now.) I sweep it up as much and as often as I can, but the constant presence really does get tiresome.
We thought perhaps changing the litter would reduce the tracking and found a silica version to try. It's supposed to be very absorptive, although it doesn't seem to be, and it also isn't very good at reducing odors.
Yesterday was warm and sunny, and I came up with a great idea: to put the litter box out on the living room balcony in the sunlight so the UV rays could evaporate what had not yet been absorbed, as well as just generally sterilize and de-odorize the entirety.
A few hours later, as a late-afternoon tempest starting kicking up from the lake, I went to bring the box back inside, pleased, because my idea had seemed to work. Pleased, until I knocked the box against the edge of the balcony door and dropped it ... and kitty litter went everywhere. And then beyond everywhere, as a gust from the tempest swooped into the mess.
The silica crystals are light and airy, and trying to gather them, especially with the force of the wind on them, was as difficult as trying to scoop up those little styrofoam balls from the inside of a beanbag. And they were lost in, on, under, and between every cranny imaginable: the hems of the curtains, the convulated form of the doorsill, the door's locking mechanism, the cracks between the floorboards, the rough pile of the rug.
After sweeping up most of it, I brought out the vacuum cleaner for the rest and began to calm down a bit. Until accidentally sucking up a toy – the cat's toy, of course – causing the vacuum cleaner to jam.
A bit of home applicance surgery later and I was able to finish the job, hopping onto the coach with a magazine right before Gilles arrived home.
All in a day's work.
That is the worst spillage story I've ever heard. I'm glad you were able to handle it without a breakdown or a freakout. You are a strong woman
ReplyDeleteindeed!
Those are the details I left out ;)
DeleteWhat a beautiful boy you have there. He is so handsome and I am already looking forward to his very own post. My old cat Jade would only be cuddles standing up as well, there she was on my shoulder all purry, the moment I sat down she was gone. Glad you got all the bits cleaned up, what a mess!
ReplyDeleteThis guy has learned only recently that it's actually kinda nice to rest a moment on my lap when I'm sitting on a kitchen chair at the computer. Anywhere else that might possibly be more comfortable or lead to more sitting-down cuddles, forget it. They can be so particular!
Deleteit's days like that where toilet training your cat doesn't sound so crazy. ;) he really is a beautiful cat!
ReplyDeleteI actually bought a kitty toilet-training kit once, in a fit of amnesia about my apartment having only one bathroom. Needless to say, the idea of sharing the toilet with the cat led to the kit never being used.
DeleteHoly crap.....I'd also rather be changing diapers! What a mess! And, tell me...did Gilles ask what you were doing all day? ;-)
ReplyDeleteP.S. We find random bits of clay litter in the most unusual places...the bathtub, for instance. Weird.
We do too! With little padded footprints on the bathtub edge to give us a clue as to who put it there ... someone who prefers leftover shower droplets to a bowlful of fresh water, clearly.
DeleteAww yes the litter box. I am not really a cat person but Cloudy is a huge cat person so we have two. I have grown to love the little purring fur balls but I still get irate when I rollover only to feel litter in the bed! Agh! It is messy stuff and it gets everywhere. Good thought on the sunshine. Sucky cleanup, sorry you had that happen.
ReplyDeleteUgh, litter in the bed is so disgusting! For me, that's tied for worst place along with under bare feet while walking to the bathroom in the middle of the night. (Or perhaps that's how it gets into the bed? The kitty wouldn't be responsible for that, not he!)
DeleteWhat a cutie! I'm sure he sat there and watched the commotion with that disdainful look that comes so naturally to cats. My cat is always judging whatever I do. I'm not sure if I meet his expectations or not.
ReplyDeleteI definitely would have lost it, especially after the vacuum debacle. I love how you were able to finish the job and situate yourself calmly on the couch right before Gilles arrived. Classic!
You capture the cattitude so well! I'm not ever sure that my guy's expectations are met or not, either, but in this case, I can be dead certain that they weren't.
Deletewow! I would have had a meltdown! Buy you actually made it sound like a fun adventure ;)
ReplyDeleteThere are other fun adventures I would be much more happy to experience!
DeleteI was thinking the same thing last night while cleaning the litter box, although the mess was nowhere near that enormity.
ReplyDeleteYour cat is gorgeous, and I totally get the day/night bipolar thing!
The UV trick was actually beneficial. Just keep a tight grip on the box if you try it!
DeleteWhat a pain about the scattered litter! But your cat is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThank you, it's always nice to hear that my own unbiased opinion is completely accurate!
DeleteOne would think litter boxes would be simple. I don't have a cat but ferrets who use a litter box also. Many times I've spilled a box, litter and poop everywhere!
ReplyDeleteThat's so funny that ferrets use litter boxes too! Does it come naturally to them the way it does to cats?
DeleteThat is a beautiful cat! He looks part Siamese, does he talk a lot?
ReplyDeleteOur cats track litter too, so we keep the litter in our bathroom and put carpets right outside the door. It seems to work pretty well, but we do need to vacuum the bathroom and carpet daily.
We don't currently have a balcony, but I know we couldn't put their litter out there if we did. Our super smart cats would totally jump off. They try to jump out our windows all the time. See, the seagulls do look pretty small from 11 stories up. :)
Yes, he's Siamese, and he talks and talks and talks. It's for that chattiness and friendliness that I love the breed, but sometimes - like at 2 o'clock in the morning - a little peace and quiet would be appreciated.
DeleteI hear you on the jumping fear. We're on the fourth story, and our cat likes to prowl on the window ledges giving the birds his laser-eyed stare. I was terrified he'd jump off at first, but so far so good (so far so clever) ....
Oh that's too good, and sounds about like how I clean!! The mess gets bigger and the appliances break, so why bother?!!! But your cat is absolutely beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteThanks. I love his little black face!
