As Gilles had planned, I didn't find out where we were going until the moment we stepped onto the connecting flight. Or at least I didn't know that I hadn't really found out where we were going until the moment we stepped onto the connecting flight. On the way to the airport, keeping up the ruse by dropping a few more misleading clues, he'd led me to believe that we were headed to Bilbao – which would have been great, too, but ... Granada!
What did we do? Not much. Well, not much if that includes starting our mornings with chocolate and churros as the church clocks struck noon, one after the other in a seeming lack of agreement about the precise moment of the hour's commencement; strolling narrow crooked little ruelles in the afternoon heat, hugging the walls to soak up the shade and absorbing the city's mix of Catholic and Muslim cultures; sipping sweet mint tea while dipping in Arab baths, alternating between hot and cold pools; marveling at the might of military and royal power in the Alhambra's forts, palaces, and gardens; taking tranquil and lazy siestas in the gracious haven of our wooden-beamed hotel; venturing out under the sunset for sangria and tapas on our favorite terrace; and finally dropping onto cool cotton sheets long after polite nightspots in Switzerland would have closed. (And among all that not much, not a moment was found to ruminate on what can handily be shoved under the all-encompassing umbrella of "trying to conceive"!)
Needless to say, les horaires espagnols, and all their implications, are sorely missed today. But there are memories, and there are photos – a few here, if you'd like to see. And as always, there is the happiness to be home again, spending time with this little black face and catching up on all of your goings-on.
the best part of waking up ...
the Alhambra, as seen from across the valley.
its summer palace.
arabesque detail.
Renaissance architecture to ground the Moorish.
the name Alhambra: attached to more than just a world heritage site.
what is Spain, if not Spain?
all the faux-Moroccan tourist tchotchkes one could care to find.
white houses clinging to the hillside.
towards la catedral.
was I allowed to buy the same pair of souvenir shoes as Gilles? no, I was not. (and I will proclaim my continued jealousy for as long as he will continue to wear them.)
Welcome Back. It looks and sounds like a fabulous time! I need to do more "not much".
ReplyDeleteI highly recommend it! (Between trips to BrUs, of course ...)
DeleteHow fun! Your pictures are gorgeous and I'm so glad you had a great time doing "nothing." Those shoes are sweet!
ReplyDeleteAren't they! They're Camper, a Spanish brand - they make really unique and easily spottable styles.
DeleteSounds wonderful Glad you got to have a break! I've missed your posts :) And my question...how in the world are your hub's feet turned in that last pic?!
ReplyDeleteHe he he ... after last week's big shaving incident, are my legs really still so hairy that you could think that mine (on the right) might match his (on the left)!?
DeleteWe tried the same style on together, and I snapped the pic in the store. As awesome as they are, they looked way better on him than on me. But if they'd suited me, I'd have walked out with them too, regardless of any of his admonishments against being shoe twins!
Ah! I loved Granada. I'm glad you had a wonderful time.
ReplyDeleteIt really is a magical place ... nice to know you enjoyed it too.
DeleteAhh, how lovely it sounds! and well done I must say to your husband for organizing the trip :)
ReplyDeleteHe outdid himself - and will be thanked by a surprise visit of his own sometime in the future!
DeleteIt sounds like a perfect getaway. Love the pictures! Thanks for sharing. :)
ReplyDeletePerfect indeed!
DeleteWelcome back! it sounds like it was a great getaway!
ReplyDeleteGood to be back!

ReplyDeleteMe too - they have such creative and unique styles!
DeleteWelcome back! Hubby went to Granada a few years back--without me! So jealous. Sounds like you two had an amazing time of doing nothing.
ReplyDeleteNow how did he get away with leaving you behind ... that's just not fair!
DeleteSounds like you had a lovely time. Thanks for sharing the pics!
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed :)
DeleteWelcome back! Your trip sounds fabulous.
ReplyDeleteThanks ... it's nice to be back.
DeleteWelcome back!!! It sounds like an amazing trip!! I love looking at other people's pictures and pretending like I went there too! Haha! :)
ReplyDeleteSometimes seeing other people's pics is what gets me planning my next getaway!
DeleteGranada is one of my favourite cities! I'm glad you had an awesome (and well-deserved, thermometer-free) time, though I missed your posts!
ReplyDeleteI also love Camper. Just bought a lovely aquamarine pair, and boy are they comfy!
It's on my list of fave cities now, too - I think it would be hard to escape its magic!
DeleteCamper colors are so nice and vibrant. Aquamarine sounds lovely!
