Changes, big and small.

As was hinted yesterday, change is in the air.

After a year and a half of off-and-on job-hunting that has proven rather fruitless in my professional field, it might be time to consider other career paths. "Why don't you teach English?" I've heard multiple times from many people. Okay, fine, why not? To that end, I will soon be taking a month-long course on ... teaching English. It begins in late July, and I've already begun preparing for it. (I wasn't just reading a grammar guide to find stupid things to blog about, you know.) Cool. For reasons related to scheduling and price, the best place for me to take that course is in England. Cool, except not. I will miss Gilles, and not only for his stud services.

Before that though, I'm going to visit my family for three weeks. I've been missing them so much and dwelling over a trip for a long time, but first I was in too fragile a state to do anything about it and then too unwilling to miss a month of potential baby-making. Now's the time to get over that, though, because after I return to Switzerland at the end of August, just in time to cry into Gilles's shoulder about the scribbled-out due date, my typical state of housewifely indolence will be rather impacted, rendering me unable to slip away anywhere until Christmas.

Why? Because in September, I'm going back, back, back to school. (Anybody else love Grease 2?) It's a two-year program at the local university for a diploma in French as a foreign language. I'm not sure what value it will have to me beyond personal enrichment, but by the time I started thinking about other kinds of programs that might perhaps lead to gainful employment, it was too late to apply with my foreign diplomas. This will fill the time very nicely for now; even if something else comes up later and I don't finish the program, I'll still benefit from what I will have learned.

In the meantime, I'm trying to kick a bad lazy personal care habit that frequent homeboundness has encouraged me to develop. If I'm here, I'm comfortable – meaning in lounging gear, as an old friend of mine with a penchant for bedazzled pink velour sweatsuits liked to call it. (Not that my particular kind of lounging gear is bedazzled, pink, or velour.)

Although Gilles is never critical, he did politely request last week that I not be in lounging gear – or, as he put it, "those horrible pajamas" – if I wanted more than a fleeting chance at accelerating the baby-making-mobile past a certain green light. If Mrs. Draper can perfectly set her golden curls and slip into girdle, robe, and stockings before greeting her low-down dirty no-good adultering specimen of a husband with a peck on the cheek and an old-fashioned, can't Madame Gilles at least slap on jeans and a cute top to brighten the homecoming of her own sweet hardworking treasure? The answer is: I can and I will, especially if it leads to what it led to the other evening ... dinner being served late (ahem).

i'm not there yet ... but i'm trying.

  1. Those all sound like good changes! I also never wear anything other than "lounging gear" when home. You could always get those pajama jeans. They are the best of both worlds, but probably hideous.

    1. Ha, that reminds me of those terrible jean diapers that came out a couple of years ago! Two worlds that should never collide ....

  2. Congrats! This sounds like a fantastic summer. It is hard to be motivated to look nice, when most of the day is spent at home, but I always feel better if I get all dolled up once and a while :)

    1. True. And now that summer's finally here, it's in fact easier to throw on a cute little dress than a set of PJs.

  3. Did he really set that ultimatum? No sex unless you're wearing real clothes?! I'm finding that pretty hilarious. I have started setting ultimatums like that with my husband occasionally, and they work pretty well because of the flip side for him - if he does what I say (put the dishes in the dishwasher, etc) then I *have* to have sex with him. Oh, men.

    1. Well, I wouldn't call it an ultimatum ... just a little request to help set the mood.

  4. That's hilarious, I would do the same thing if I was at home. In fact, I push the limits of work wear really. "These flowy black yoga pants look professional don't they?" Sounds like some time well spent coming up too, visiting family will be good!

    1. Funny, I didn't realize how much closer that part of Germany is to England than to Switz. Would be so cool to meet!

  6. Wow! So many things happening. I'm actually quite envious of your opportunity to study the French language full time. I'm hoping that at some stage my work might allow me the time to do so. I feel like it's the only way to improve.

Love Mad Men! Did you watch the season finale?

    1. I am thankful for the opportunity. It would be super if your job allowed you to do that - it is so much easier when you're totally immersed.

I'm only on Season 3 of MM, on DVD - hence my outdated Mrs. Betty Draper reference!

  7. Sounds like you have some very busy times ahead. Family time sounds wonderful...I'm a bit spoiled myself having everyone I care about within a 4 hour driving radius of myself. It sounds like you are in definite need of an extended trip to see everyone. Very exciting career and scholar opportunities ahead as well! I look forward to reading about all your new adventures.

    1. Oh and lounging gear is definitely my norm when I am at home. Even when we had company over for dinner last night I couldn't resist wearing my yoga pants. I wore the "dressy" ones...a.k.a the pair without any tears or stains on them.

    2. Four hours ... ahh, the envy! Thanks for the support of my endeavors - the excitement is contagious. And I love your definition of dressy yoga pants.

  9. Very exciting stuff!

See, we have the opposite problem, since Hubby is the one who's underemployed at our house. I'm lucky if he's wearing pants when I come home. He doesn't see a problem with this, of course. But, on the flip side, he loves when I wear pajamas and/or sweatpants. So I guess I lucked out there.

  10. Ooooh, exciting! Where about's in England will you be? London I guess? I count it a very productive day if I am still in real clothes with my bra on when Kitt gets home. I think the French course will be great, I would love to properly learn a language. I have sporadically tried to learn German but never really given it the time I should. Good for you! And the trip back to family is sure to be wonderful. I am excited about all of these things for you, and you never know, that late dinner might mean you get to do them all whilst cooking a little bun. x x x

    1. Thank you for your contagious excitement! It's in the north, actually - I'll be staying with family. So it's also a lovely opportunity to get to know some relations I don't know very well or, as is the case with some, have never even met before.

  11. You are coming to England! oh, please send me an email if you would like to meet up :) These are great things to look forward to but I get that it will be hard to be away from each other. Good for you to make these changes though.

    2. Aha, going north I read, I'm about 30min train ride from London so there will be some distance. Hmm, isn't Emhart moving north? Anyway, if it's possible it would be fun to meet up.

    3. I am moving north, but only by an hour. I am going from south Herefordshire to just outside Birmingham.

    4. Google tells me I'll be 1.5 hours from Birmingham and 2.5 hours from London, on train. This could be possible ... and would be oh-so-incredible! I'll keep you both posted when I know more about my schedule.

    5. And national rail tells me I can be in Birmingham in 1.5 hours as well.. could be a meeting point :) keep us posted.

  12. I seriously laughed out loud at this post! I'm glad you're going back to school and I hope you enjoy your summer course! I am an English teacher :) I feel that if I am ever in "your neck of the woods" (I don't want to say where lest your blog get stolen again) we should hang out. I find you a very kindred spirit :) OH and I would totally wear sweats every day. Maybe if you put on pearls with the sweats it would be ok?

    1. Ah, nice to know that we will have that in common! Although of course my course is for English teaching lite ... it's not at all like an academic teaching program. Perhaps that will follow one day.

To kindred spirits - in sweats, pearls, and don't forget stilettos too!

(Oh, and I removed the blog from search engines so go ahead and use the name if you'd like.)

  13. I'm with Kaybee...to many late dinners! ;)

It's exciting that you're taking on all these adventures and changes!! And while I still actually hope that the biggest possible change may yet be in the cards for you this month... I'm all for 'taking a break' in whatever form. I have found that when baby making is not the sole focus of my life for short periods of time, and I can work on other projects too, I actually come back refreshed and with a renewed committment. I'm in the same boat at the moment - a whole month of travels means I'm apart from my husband for the *important dates*, but some huge and exciting prospects for our future (and we hope, our future family!) are in the works.

I wish you a great time with your folks, and like Marwil, I'd also love to meet up during my own summer visit to England! Happy trails!

    1. Thanks for sharing these much-appreciated positive aspects of taking a break. I hope I can find that refreshment and renewal of commitment, too.

It sounds like you have some wonderful things ahead of you - I'm looking forward to learning more! And do let me know if you do happen to be in England - it would be lovely to meet if there is a chance of doing so.

  14. hilarious post about the lounging gear! haha....I do that when I'm home. I love all my sweats and pajama pants. Although I realize that T likes it f and when I dress up, so I try to that for him...

Sounds like you'll have a wonderful summer! Have a great time at home and in England!!
    xx
