I was reading through the instructions for my most recently purchased batch of pregnancy tests (like I don't know how to pee on a stick) and came across this:
However, because a significant number of first trimester pregnancies terminate for natural reasons, ... [blah blah blah].
It's such a simple, plain, inoffensive, matter-of-fact little phrase: A significant number of first trimester pregnancies terminate for natural reasons. Such a simple, plain, inoffensive, matter-of-fact little way to sum up something that I haven't been able to come to terms with despite a million tears and almost as many words right here in this little space.
(And don't worry, I'm not cheating. I'm just preparing.)
I don't like that phrasing. I am not exactly sure why but it feels like it is saying, "you don't have the right to get upset, we warned you it might not work, well, it wasn't a real pregnancy yet anyway. Suck it up softie". I just don't like it. I want some acknowledgement that it is the heartbreaking loss of a potential baby and a new life, and the dashing of all your hopes and dreams. It sounds like you are girl guide prepared.
It's so medical, so matter-of-fact - nothing at all to indicate how heartbreaking or hope-shattering it could possibly be. Not that I would expect any kind of empathy from pregnancy test instructions ...
I've never like those instructions. They aren't written for anyone who's had a miscarriage or deals with infertility. I had one that suggested waiting a couple weeks to test again if you get a negative after your period is due. No biggie...just wait even longer...it's not that important, right? ugh

ReplyDeleteA couple of weeks! Were there any instructions on what one should do to be able to hold out that long?!
